'The Playboy Club' series premiere recap: Chasing Tale

playboy-club_320.jpg

My colleague Ken Tucker has referred to The Playboy Club as "the least sexy new show of the fall season," and I'll give him that. We've seen Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus wear as little onstage as these Bunnies, so the heaving bosoms blend into the background. The men in the club are, so far, portrayed as chauvinists who either want to buy a Bunny for the night or to marry her and knock her up so no one else will want what is his. By the end of the hour, we got a hint of

Leaving Basking Ridge, Preparing for Campus

After months of visiting colleges, studying for exams, writing essay after essay, and submitting applications, the hard part is over. The decisions have been made, deposits are received, and the typical recent high school graduate is free to spend the summer days celebrating and spending some last few moments with friends and family.
The laborious application process helps prove a student is prepared for the academic challenges ahead. However, the buzzing excitement of the impending move-in day elicits fear in many incoming college freshmen. The application did not evaluate how well one can cooperate with a roommate (who is usually

WHO says students are skint? A new pair of designer boots – worth more than £100 – are set to boost a charity’s coffers after a big clean-up involving the University of Birmingham.
The posh Ugg footwear – still in their box – was among a £13,000 haul generated when university officials asked students to clear out belongings they no longer wanted.
Clothes, books, CDs, DVDs and computer and electrical equipment was handed over, with the British Heart Foundation the good cause to benefit.
The campaign also helped address the complaints of residents in Selly Oak and Bournbrook – where

Terrelle Pryor unjustly served by suspension

The No Fun League became the Gladys Kravitz Conference on Thursday.
You remember Gladys, the busybody neighbor from "Bewitched"? Relatively speaking, she had a sense of decorum. Unlike the NFL, she didn't overstep boundaries because she wanted to maintain a staggeringly lucrative shadow business arrangement that exploits young labor.
The NFL imposed a five-game suspension on former Ohio State quarterback Terrelle Pryor, punishing him for violating the honor of the league's skanky paramour, the NCAA. Pryor accepted the deal because he had no other realistic way to get into Monday's supplemental draft. Fighting the legitimacy of a professional sport punishing

Youthful Buccaneers led by trio of 30-somethings

The emerging star quarterback, Josh Freeman, is 23. His go-to target, Mike Williams, is 24. Gerald McCoy, Adrian Clayborn and Da'Quan Bowers, the developing defensive line nucleus, are 23, 23 and 21. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the youngest team in the NFL last season, when they nearly made the playoffs, improving from 3-13 in 2009 to 10-6. With one of the NFL's youngest general managers, Mark Dominik, 40, projecting that perhaps 10 rookies will make the 53-man roster, they will be even younger this season.
Guided, fittingly, by the NFL's youngest coach, 34-year-old Raheem Morris.
Says cornerback Ronde Barber,

Ugg! Pam puts her foot in it

Pamela Anderson has apologised for wearing dead sheep on her feet.
The former Baywatch star says she has thrown away her favourite Ugg boots, because she didn't know they were made from shaved sheep skin.
She wrote on her personal website: "I'm getting rid of my Uggs - I feel so guilty for that craze being started around my Baywatch days. I used to wear them with my red swim suit to keep warm never realising that they were skin! I thought they were shaved kindly."
The mother-of-two, who is a staunch animal rights activist and member of Peta, is

Invisible presence at GOP debate in Iowa: Rick Perry

Ames, Iowa
He wasn’t in the auditorium, but Texas Gov. Rick Perry loomed large over the eight candidates sparring at the GOP presidential debate Thursday night in Ames, Iowa.
Governor Perry is expected to announce his candidacy for president Saturday, a likely game-changer in the nascent 2012 race. The Texan brings to the table long executive experience, a record of job creation, populist charisma, and fundraising ability. He could give current (but weak) frontrunner Mitt Romney the kind of challenge the former governor of Massachusetts hasn’t faced yet from the already-announced candidates.
In fact, at Thursday’s debate, Mr. Romney stayed

The buzz | NFL Hall of Famer Perry dies

nfl-national-football-league.jpg

Hall of Fame fullback Joe Perry, the first NFL player with back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons, died Monday. He was 84. The San Francisco 49ers announced that Perry, also a World War II veteran, had died Monday in Arizona of complications from dementia.
Perry, nicknamed “The Jet” for his sensational speed, was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969 following a 16-year NFL career, 14 years with the 49ers and the other two for the Baltimore Colts. He broke the NFL record for most career yards rushing, a total that was later topped by Jim Brown.
Perry was

NFL draft: Safeties

61090462.jpg

Front-office men are calling this one of the worst safety classes ever. It's likely no safety will be selected in the first round for the first time in 11 years. And there's not much depth either. The supply doesn't diminish the demand, however. Look for teams to reach to fill their holes.
1. Rahim Moore, UCLA, 6-0, 202. This athletic player has the ball skills to play free safety. Though he was very productive in 2009, Moore fell off in 2010. He ran a 4.58 in the 40-yard dash at the combine, which did not help his stock. But he

Basketball: USC 62, Washington 60

Jio Fontan and Nikola Vucevic both produced big-time games and USC came away with a closer-than-it-had-to-be two-point win, 62-60, at Washington's Alaska Airlines Arena on Saturday.
Fontan scored 20 points, Vucevic had 19 points and 10 rebounds and senior Alex Stepheson provided a big 11-point, 14-rebound line as the Trojans pulled off the upset, but they almost let the game go away in the final minutes. They led by 14 points with 13 minutes to go in the game and by eight with five minutes to go until Washington had a last-second opportunity to pull it close when USC missed
